Testing Uncharted Territory

1–2 minutes

I’m no web developer. In fact, until just recently (less than a year ago), I had never manipulated a single piece of a web page. My personal career was in nursing, and I’ve never been super-technologically savvy. But – I was willing to TRY. This website is a culmination of a streak of determination, along with some haphazard key strokes and mouse clicks. Most frequently, “apply changes” and then “send to trash”. I learn the most by doing, not from lectures or elaborate instruction, because I tend to get lost in the nuance of wordiness.

This website is being constructed piece-by-piece by a mom on a mission, and not by some hired hand. I saw a glaring need in my hometown that inspired me to start this little (for now!) non-profit. I don’t want to simply collect and distribute money. I want to pioneer a way for my son, and others like him, to fit into and utilize the community. Unfortunately, his ASD diagnosis has also entailed long wait lists, dismissal of services secondary to state-funded program enrollment, and many other barriers. I don’t want life to simply feel like “survival” for these individuals and their caretakers. No one deserves to live out their days in survival mode.

My hope, in establishing this organization, is that parents and caretakers of children and adults with ASDs will come together, root themselves in community, and only then forge a path forward that will leave a lasting mark on the Anderson, SC community. We are to become the representation where there is none.
